Using Magnets In Medicine Is Not A New Idea

The use of magnets in medicine is not something new. In fact magnets have been used for thousands of years, and many people are not aware of this fact. They think magnet therapy is some new-fangled alternative medicine. Skeptics argue there is no scientific proof they can be effective for the control of pain which is not true. Controlled studies at university medical facilities have shown that the correct placement of specially designed magnets over the area where the pain is occurring does relieve the pain for many people. That is why thousands of athletes use magnets and don’t worry about what others think. It is hard to argue with results.

So exactly how do the magnets work to relieve pain? There are detailed scientific explanations that use words like “c-fiber nerves” and “unmyelinated nerves” to explain the conduction of pain along nerve routes in the body. But in layman’s terms the magnets work by blocking the sodium, potassium and calcium from accumulating and causing the nerve pressure and pain. When using magnets in medicine, the magnets are attached to the skin right over the area where the pain is felt.

If you think this concept sounds a bit far fetched, then consider this: the electronic resonance imaging machine (MRI) uses a magnetic field to obtain pictures of body tissue in great detail. Athletes know that magnetic therapy accelerates bone healing which is another reason why many athletes are sold on the use of magnets as alternative medicine. Athletes like to avoid taking drugs whenever possible so the use of magnets can provide much needed pain relief in a safe and healthy manner.

Back pain is one of the most common medical problems people experience. Upper or lower back pain can be debilitating. Some people have intense and short episodes of pain while others live with a dull chronic pain. Back pain affects the quality of life in that it can force people to restrict their activities and living with constant pain is extremely stressful.

The use of magnets in medicine in medicine offers alternative pain management without the use of drugs or invasive surgery. The magnets can relieve pain by interrupting the flow of natural body elements that stimulate the nerves and increase blood flow to the pain area. It is well documented that healing can be speeded up by increasing blood flow, because blood carries oxygen. That is one reason why magnetic therapy is used to heal the bones of athletes that have been broken or fractured.

It should be mentioned that magnets are used to block pain in many other areas of the body besides the back. The magnets can relieve pain in the shoulders, neck, elbows, knees and feet. The comprehensive use of magnets in medicine offers pain relief to many people who have decided they will never find relief from pain.

Magnetic therapy has a lot of advantages over traditional methods of pain control. When looking at the use of magnets in medicine, it is …

Sleep Apnea: Can A Dentist Help?

It is said that sleep apnea affects up to twelve million people in the United States. There are several treatments available for this debilitating problem, but did you know that a dentist may actually be able to provide you with a solution?

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs when a person unconsciously takes breaks or gaps in their breathing whilst sleeping. Each occurrence of this, known as an apneic event, must last at least ten seconds in order for the disorder to be diagnosed. One of the issues with sleep apnea is that a person may not know that they have it, as they are unconscious whilst it happens. Reports of sleep apnea generally come from outside observers – someone who is sleeping near to or next to the sufferer.

The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This occurs when a person’s muscles and soft tissues relax during sleep and cause a slight obstruction in the airways. The most obvious symptom of this condition is very loud snoring. They may also be plagued by fatigue during the day even though there is seemingly no reason for it.

Treatments for sleep apnea range from a change in sleeping position to the use of ‘breathing machines’ which effectively force the airways to remain open during sleep. However, a surprising solution is now being widely implemented by the dental community.

How Can Dentists Help with Sleep Apnea?

Because sleep apnea affects the airways of the sufferer, it may seem surprising that a dentist can help ease the problem; however, dentists are actually a great choice for the job as they are able to craft ‘oral appliances’ that are tailored perfectly to fit a patient’s mouth.

Oral appliance therapy is a simple yet elegant solution to the problem of sleep apnea. In a nutshell, it involves a dentist taking a cast of a person’s teeth, then designing an appliance (usually made from silicone or plastic) which supports the mouth in such a way that it prevents the muscles and soft tissues from ‘sagging’ when relaxed.

Does Oral Appliance Therapy Really Work for Sleep Apnea?

Oral appliance therapy has been shown in studies to be very successful in the symptomatic treatment of sleep apnea. This means that whilst the patient still suffers sleep apnea, the symptoms are reduced or eliminated entirely. Many sufferers of sleep apnea recommend oral appliance therapy over any other treatment.

The only real downside to oral appliance therapy is the fact that the appliances themselves will degrade over time. This is particularly the case if the sleep apnea sufferer also grinds their teeth during their sleep. This teeth grinding can cause premature wear and tear to the appliance and decrease the amount of time before a replacement must be created by a dentist.

Why Is a Dentist More Beneficial than other Treatments for Sleep Apnea?

Who knows more about your mouth than your dentist? Maybe not even you! With this being the case, there is nobody …

During this period in the health sector, the concept of free medical care was revoked and people were required to pay, even if partially, for the health services (1). The Ninth Five Year Plan (1997-2002) emphasized the need to review the response of the public, voluntary and private sector health care providers as well as the population themselves to the changing health scenario, to reorganize health services to bring about greater efficiency and effectiveness and to introduce health system reforms to enable the population to obtain optimum care at affordable cost The Ninth Plan sought to increase the involvement of voluntary, private organizations and self-help groups in the provision of health care and ensure inter-sectoral coordination in implementation of health programmes and health-related activities as well as enable the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) in planning and monitoring of health programmes at the local level so as to bring about greater responsiveness to health needs of the people and greater accountability; to promote inter-sectoral coordination and utilise local and community resources for health care(2) .The Tenth Five Year Plan (2002-2007) touches upon reforms at primary, secondary and tertiary level(3).                         Politics influence health systems in significant manner. The goals, priorities, and the strategies, variations in the commitment are largely decided through the political contingencies. There are competing demands on the health systems. The evolution of the health systems is largely shaped by the culture, history, and norms. Client satisfaction is very high. As per NFHS-2 data, an overwhelming majority of clients are satisfied by the services delivered by the public systems. May be the expectations are low or may be our people are so courteous. But on the hand, we have the report from Transparent International, ranked the health system in India is the most corrupt system (4)   The Government has taken several steps for improving the public health care institutions and Strengthening the primary health care infrastructure. However, the situation is compounded by severe resource constraints – financial, technical and human power related, which has resulted in policy makers as well as programme managers at differing levels being faced with difficult choices. In such a situation, attempts are being made through various reform initiatives to ensure that the health needs of the people are met One of the major reform initiatives underway is the Secondary Health System Strengthening Project funded by the World Bank in seven states (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh).
