Anemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells i.e. decreases in number of red blood cells (RBCs) or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood.
The normal level of hemoglobin is different in males and females. For men, anemia is typically defined as hemoglobin level of less than 13 g/dl and in women as hemoglobin of less than 12.0 g/dl.
Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells. It gives red blood cells their red color. People with anemia do not have enough hemoglobin. Red blood cells provide oxygen to body tissues, anemia leads to hypoxia in organs. As all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, severity of anemia can have a wide range of complications.
Most of the work of making red blood cells is done in the bone marrow, though many parts of the body are also essential. Healthy red blood cells last between 90 and 120 days.
There are several causes of anemia, few of them are, poor diet, pregnancy, malfunction in bone marrow, auto immune response that cause destruction of blood cells, chronic diseases such as cancer, renal diseases, certain medication also caused anemia.
Iron is major component of hemoglobin and is vital for its proper function. Anemia that is due to low iron levels is called iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency it is a very common cause of anemia. Women are more likely than men to have iron deficiency anemia because of the loss of blood each month through normal menstruation.
Most commonly, people with anemia report non-specific symptoms of a feeling of weakness, lack of energy or fatigue, general malaise and sometimes lack of concentration. They may also report shortness of breath on hard work. In very severe anemia, the body may compensate for the lack of oxygen carrying capability of the blood by increasing cardiac activities.
Anemia can be detected through physical examination as well as performing CBC and other tests.
How is anemia treated?
The treatment of the anemia varies greatly. First, the cause of the anemia should be identified and corrected. Sometimes iron supplements will also be needed to correct iron deficiency. In severe anemia, blood transfusions may be necessary. Vitamin B12 injections will be necessary for patients suffering from pernicious anemia or other causes of B12 deficiency.
